A Unique Love Story

An inspiring comment on one of my posts led me to track down Douglas profile. As I explored his page, I came across his testimony, which deeply moved me. Compelled by curiosity, I privately reached out to him and bombarded him with a few questions—including some uncomfortable ones. He was gracious enough to answer most of them, and he also granted me permission to share his story.
At first, Douglas’ testimony troubled me, especially considering biblical teachings. As I read further, my concerns grew—not just as a Christian, but also as a mother of young adults. What would I want for my children? How would I have handled this situation? Scripture is clear that believers should not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. So how could a deeply immoral man—a drunkard—be drawn to and ultimately united with a devoted Christian? However, one lesson I have learned prior to this time is that no matter how much we think we understand God’s ways, we must always leave room for Him to be God and always respect His place of authority as God.
An Unexpected Catch: A Journey from Darkness to Light
Approximately 45 years ago, Douglas, a young man with no religious background, was invited to church by a friend—not for spiritual reasons, but with the wrong motivation of picking up girls. At the time, Douglas was deeply immersed in a lifestyle of drinking and partying, firmly believing in Darwinian evolution with no awareness of God.
During their girl fishing trip, Douglas’ net had unexpectedly caught the “wrong” fish—Peggy, a Christian raised in a devout household. When he first met Peggy, something about her stood out. Though his initial attraction was not rooted in pure love— given his wild and immoral lifestyle—he immediately felt a sense of safety around her. And so, their relationship began.
Douglas being not a Christian in reality was determined to pull Peggy away from her faith. For three years, he tried to convince her that Christianity was a myth, believing she had been brainwashed. Their relationship was filled with tension—while he wanted to spend Friday nights at bars, she preferred to be in church.

Douglas resistance to faith was deeply ingrained. Raised in a home where Christianity was dismissed as a crutch, he viewed the church with skepticism. His second visit to a service only reinforced his doubts. Seeing people raising their hands and speaking in unfamiliar ways, he thought they had lost their minds. When a man approached him, offering to pray that he would become ambidextrous, Douglas was bewildered. Prayer, to him, was a meaningless concept.
Feeling overwhelmed, he decided he could no longer handle Peggy’s faith. He resolved to break up with her. However, in a strange and unexpected moment, when he tried to tell her, he found that his mouth physically would not open. No matter how hard he tried, he was unable to speak the words. The experience shook him.
Despite his resistance, conversations about God continued. People around Peggy tried to explain faith to him seeing his attachment to Peggy, but without any understanding of the Bible, their words made no sense. Peggy’s parents, strong believers and church planter, disapproved of their relationship and did everything they could to separate them. Despite their efforts, Douglas was persistent. Looking back, Douglas acknowledges that if Jesus were not real, he would never have come to believe. His journey was not one of mere persuasion—it was an encounter that changed everything.
Like some others, Douglas’ initial experience with Christianity was not that great, but then one thing remained certain—his deep love for Peggy. When Peggy eventually broke up with him, the pain was unbearable. Desperate to see her, he would run with his friends from Esquimalt to James Bay and back, just to catch a fleeting glimpse of her. The effort took a physical toll—he eventually injured his left ankle during the run, leaving him with a limp that would persist for nearly twenty years. Even as he dismissed Christianity, his love for Peggy kept pulling him closer to a world he had long rejected.
A Turning Point in Chemainus

As Douglas and Peggy’s relationship faced turmoil, Peggy made a firm decision—she would no longer continue with him unless he was willing to explore her world. She invited him to the island, and though reluctant, Douglas finally agreed.
What he found there was unexpected. Instead of judgmental stares or distant religious talk, he met men who were athletes—people he could relate to. Slowly, his walls began to come down. He attended his first Bible study, and to his surprise, every word seemed to speak directly to his life.
Douglas kept telling Peggy, “You planned this, didn’t you?” But she hadn’t. He even kept missing the ferry back, as if something greater was keeping him there.
Shortly after, he was invited to a Baptist church in Chemainus, where a missionary was speaking. Something about the man’s humility struck him deeply. During the message, he found himself weeping uncontrollably. Then, on the way home, while driving through the pouring rain, he could not stop crying. Everything changed—he believed in Christ and yielded his life to Him.
Douglas didn’t fully understand theology, the cross, or the depth of what Jesus had done, but he knew one thing: he now believed in Jesus.

Upon arriving home at the party house where he lived with friends, he noticed an immediate shift. His favorite rock band, AC/DC, was blasting, but for the first time, the lyrics disturbed him. He locked himself in his room for days, overwhelmed by emotions he couldn’t explain. The changes were undeniable:
- He could no longer swear.
- The desire for alcohol vanished.
- His favorite TV shows, filled with crude humor and nudity, became unwatchable.
- Most strikingly, the hatred and resentment he had harbored toward his father for years—thoughts that had plagued his mind daily—suddenly lifted, like a dark cloud disappearing.
No one had taught him the Ten Commandments. No one had told him to change his ways. What happened to him was supernatural—something he had never experienced before.
A New Journey Begins
Douglas found himself drawn to the Bible in a way he had never expected. He got his first leather-bound copy and, within a year, had completely worn it out—he simply couldn’t put it down. He knew it was true, and he couldn’t keep it to himself. Everywhere he went, he shared what he had discovered, unable to stay silent about his newfound faith.
One year later, he and Peggy were married. Their journey together took a bold turn as they gave up everything to attend Bible school. Deep in their hearts, they knew their calling was clear: they were meant to be missionaries, bringing their faith to foreign nations.

Their love story, once filled with doubts and struggles, had now become a testimony of transformation, purpose, and divine direction. They have now been married for 41 years and blessed with amazing children.
A Full Circle Moment
A remarkable twist occurred when Douglas met a former missionary who had once preached in Peggy’s hometown. Unbeknownst to the missionary, his message years earlier had played a pivotal role in Douglas’ spiritual awakening. Before leaving for Colombia, Douglas and Peggy worked in a small Spanish church in Vancouver. One day, a man unexpectedly joined them. He sat beside Douglas, looking visibly downcast. Sensing his sadness, Douglas struck up a conversation to encourage him.
As they talked, the man revealed that he had once been a missionary but had left the ministry. With a heavy heart, he shared that his last assignment had been at a small church on Vancouver Island, a place where he felt his ministry had not gone well.
Curious, Douglas asked, “How many years ago was that?”
The man thought for a moment. “A few years,” he replied.
Douglas pressed further. “Was it a Baptist church in Chemainus?”
The man’s eyes widened. “Yes, it was.”
At that moment, Douglas could no longer hold back his emotions. Tears welled up as he said, “My wife and I are about to leave for the mission field. Your last sermon at that church touched me so deeply that I couldn’t stop weeping for days. That message led me to know Jesus.”
The man, who had believed his ministry had been fruitless, was now hearing firsthand how God had used him to change a life.
It was a powerful reminder that even when we feel like we’ve failed, God’s work is never in vain.
The Perfect Standard
What a happy ending. But then, should this kind of relationship be the standard for any believer? Absolutely not. We share this story because it had a successful outcome, but we must remember that even a broken clock is right twice a day. We don’t know who was interceding for Peggy or Douglas in prayer. Perhaps Peggy’s parents, pastors, or friends were fervently praying about her troubling relationship. Maybe Peggy had even been dedicated to God from birth, with a divine covering that ensured anyone who crossed her path would encounter salvation and ministry. We shouldn’t forget that Peggy’s father was a church planter.
This is why we should never compare our situations with others. Each person’s journey is unique, and God’s plans unfold differently for everyone. The safest path is always obedience—remaining where God has called us to be.
