Lessons of Faith, Trust, and God’s Unfailing Care

Have you ever found yourself questioning whether God truly hears your prayers—whether whispered in secret or spoken aloud? Do you wonder if He still cares, if He is moving on your behalf, carrying your pain, and fully aware of the urgency behind your cries? Do you also know that every child of God holds the potential to be a vessel of His power, almost like an angel in disguise? Now, hear Lois’s powerful testimony.
While visiting the town of Brooks, Alberta, Lois and her grandson headed for the park early on Labour Day morning. The reason for their visit was uncertain, but the beautiful day made going to the park seem like the right choice. In a new town, making contacts was important, though they had no idea what awaited them. Joshua was cozy in the “snuggly” carrier that Lois used, with a sweater wrapped around his bare legs to keep him warm. A small sun cap was set on his head to ward off the morning chill. Being with Joshua was always a special experience.
Looking over the crest of the hill, they saw children playing in the park. They approached and chose a tire swing, hanging sideways like a tire on a rope. The two enjoyed drifting back and forth in the sun’s rays. Nearby, two little girls seemed to enjoy going down slides. The narrator started a conversation: “No,” the girls replied, “they didn’t live nearby.” The older girl mentioned that they were traveling and had spent the night in their car, which was unusual for them, as their mother explained she had no money. This caught Lois’s attention. An older brother, about ten, approached with a large collie on a leash. His name was David, and he came over to see the baby, Joshua, who greeted him with a big smile. The children appeared healthy and happy. Their mother then approached and explained that they were returning home to British Columbia, but their car was low on gas, and she would have to wait a day. The banks would be open the next day, allowing her to withdraw money, but her bank card was damaged, preventing her from accessing cash. The narrator stood up to leave, and the mother walked alongside for a few steps. She mentioned the chill of the night, noting her light sweater, and their car was parked nearby. Lois wondered what it would be like to sleep four in a car, and what about the big dog?
“I hope you have some money for food,” the narrator said as they prepared to leave.
“Oh, we’ll manage,” the mother replied, “We have some peanut butter sandwiches.”
Wanting to help but unsure how, the Lois continued walking, feeling a desire to do more. The mother called out, “Have a good trip back to Edmonton.” Returning the wish seemed inadequate; Lois felt compelled to do more for the family. She recognized the family’s need for a good meal and for a safe journey home to British Columbia. As Lois continued walking with Joshua, she remained deep in thought. While parks often housed vagrants, these children and their mother looked healthy and happy. Lois couldn’t simply leave them.
Lois found her husband and narrated everything to him, and together they returned to the park. The children, the dog, and the car with Ontario plates—all were still there. Lois then handed the mother some bills, saying, “Here’s money to take you home,” and added, “God bless you.” The mother responded, “You’re a Christian too.” Tears welled in her eyes, which she quickly wiped away.
Through misty eyes, she explained, “I prayed, and God gave me assurance that He would take care of us.” Lois felt tears welling up as well.
As they walked away, Lois turned back at the hill’s crest and saw the mother and little girl standing together. She raised her arm in greeting, and Lois waved back.
Lois then reflects that this was the reason for her early morning park visit. A child of God called upon the Heavenly Father, who awakened His little angel in that area to respond to the request.
Weeks later, a letter arrived thanking them for their help and praising God’s mercy. Enclosed was a money order for seventy dollars, intended as a gift.
From this experience, Lois, who was also trusting God for a particular intervention and mercy, learned much. They saw that the young mother was a woman of faith, trusting in God’s care without conveying any fear to her children. More than ever, they understood that God can be trusted. Reflecting on the night before that special morning, Lois recalled thinking they needed to be awake to enjoy the early sun, thoughts that coincided with the mother praying. Most importantly, the experience assured Lois and her family that God would care for their son and his family, who had recently moved to that town.

As believers in Christ, we must know that:

These lessons should motivate us as believers to strengthen our faith, rely on God’s unwavering care, and express His love through acts of kindness and dedicated prayer.
