When Mercy Speaks Louder Than Schemes

Genesis 33, I felt that it is Esau—not Jacob—who shines with unexpected grace. Though Jacob was chosen and carried God’s covenant, he still leaned on human wisdom and cautious schemes most of the time. Esau, by contrast, displayed forgiveness, humility, and a longing for reconciliation despite all. His generosity, even when refused, revealed a heart softened beyond human expectation.

However, among many other lessons, this chapter reminds us of God’s nature that He is sovereign in mercy—blessing not by merit but by His choice. He is compassionate and patient, working through flawed people. He is faithful, keeping His promises despite human weakness. In Jeremiah 17:10, He said: “I the LORD search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”
We can never figure God out. His dealing is beyond us. It is not our cleverness, goodness, or self-righteousness that secures His blessing, but his limitless, unstoppable, and life-transforming mercy.
Lord, may Your glorious mercy cover us, and may we reflect Your heart of grace in our dealings with others.
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Roman 11:33-36
