The Battle for Your Mind

Feelings of self-pity, deception, depression, anger, and bitterness are tools the devil employs to ensnare and torment his victims, trapping them in a destructive cycle. When we begin to engage with the devil and entertain the thoughts he subtly plants in our hearts, we fall under the influence of the great Deceiver. This tactic is one the enemy knows well. He first used it on Eve in the Garden of Eden, and its impact continues to mislead humanity today. Scripture reveals that Satan is both a liar and the father of lies: “When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it” (John 8:44b).
One thing is clear: God does not burden His children with afflictions that leave them bitter, devoid of grace, and without hope. That is the work of our greatest adversary. So, why should we partner with him and allow his lies to take root in our hearts? Countless homes, relationships, friendships, communities, nations, and even church families have suffered due to our unchecked actions and the harmful words we speak—words that the enemy has quietly planted and nurtured in our hearts.
When we hear or read something, our hearts instinctively process it in various ways. The way we interpret and respond depends largely on the condition of our minds. Is the mind sensitive, the heart tainted, the thoughts biased, or filled with complaints and hatred? Or is the heart loving, the mind gentle and godly? Each type of heart will produce different outcomes in life’s situations. Who do we allow to cultivate and nurture the soil of our hearts? How healthy is the “landing page” of our minds?

This is why the Bible instructs us to “not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).
What do we allow to thrive in our hearts, controlling our behavior, expression, and life? In this world, things will happen. We will offend one another, intentionally or unintentionally. We will hear things that disturb or disorient us. People won’t always meet our expectations because no one is a perfect replica of another. Even when pastors stand on the pulpit to declare God’s word to their congregation, the interpretation and reception will vary among the listeners.
We must remember that life is full of diversity. These days, the challenges around us seem overwhelming, and many are beyond our control. To avoid being caught up in confusion and pain, we must dwell in God’s word: “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee. Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established” (Proverbs 4:23-27). This is the biblical counsel for us to ponder. We will never go astray following God’s wisdom.

The best way to live in peace and maintain a heart free of offense toward God and man is by constantly renewing our minds with God’s word and dwelling in love rather than feasting on offenses. Being positive will do us more good than harm. Let us strive to see the good in every story and occurrence and draw something good from what seems negative. Our actions and responses in life reveal who we are and determine our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
“He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” (Matthew 13:9)

Many thanks for sharing this beautiful article. It is when we renew our minds constantly with the word of God that we are kept above the tumult of life.
Recently, I made a personal recovery on how to constantly hear the word of God. Whenever I am not doing something that needs my utmost concentration and thinking, I listen to voice over bible chapters. At the end of the exercise, my spirit becomes lifted especially when I am burdened down with cares and experiencing stress. I also sleep well at the end of any day I give priority to reading and listening to God’s word.

Amen! Thanks so much, Dr. Alabi for sharing this. We carry unnecessary burdens when we focus too much on our challenges instead of soaking in the truth of the words of God and standing on the unfailing promises of God.
