The Highway Angel Encounter

I must have interacted with an angel some years ago. Whether it was a human angel or a heavenly one, I’m not sure, but there was something unique about the encounter.
It was during a late-night drive on a highway, and I was on a time- and life-sensitive assignment. Submerged in inspirational music from the car player, I was flowing in the joy of the Lord, unconcerned about the thick darkness around me on a lonely two-way highway that cut through farmland, and a moderate forest. I was one of the few cars on the road at that hour. It was so dark that you could barely see anything except the car headlights guiding the way. Suddenly, I heard a loud, confusing sound, which took me a while to decipher. The consistent sound was now coupled with the shaking of the car. That’s when I realized the noise was coming from my car. I had no choice but to find a safe place to park on that dark and deserted highway.
I got out and discovered that I had a flat tire. How could this have happened? My husband had just replaced all four tires with brand new ones. For several minutes, I had no idea what to do. Then I remembered the spare tire and that people do change tires, although I had never done it before. I also didn’t know how to remove the spare because of how it was stylishly secured to the car, which was something I used to love about it. Additionally, although I had been driving the car for years, I never had reason to look for the tire accessories, so I wasn’t sure where they were kept.
I was simply stuck that night, all alone. On both sides of the road were trees and bushes, with the nearest residential area several kilometers away. I thought of seeking help, but who would stop in that area at that time of night? I had no choice but to step aside from the car and wave down passing cars. Unsurprisingly, no one stopped. I could understand why: the car broke down in a suspicious place, with no light or buildings, just a sketchy little forest area. To perfect what God would do that night, my dark skin blended well with the night, and the car’s color wasn’t helpful either. By the time anyone saw me or noticed the car, they would have driven some distance away.
After trying several times with no success, I decided to risk driving on the rim—thankfully, it had an alloy rim. I started driving slowly along the road, knowing there was a town a few kilometers away. As I crawled on the rim, I suddenly noticed a vehicle behind me slowly following me.. For a second, I was relieved, thinking it was a police car, but then I realized it had no police car lights. All the same, I parked and stayed inside the car. A huge man got out of the vehicle and approached me. When he asked if I needed help, I felt at peace despite him being a total stranger. I explained that I had a flat tire and didn’t know how to change it. He offered to help, so I stepped out of the car.
“Do you have the key to the car tire?” he asked. I went blank for a moment, wondering about the “key to the tires.”” Then I remembered my husband giving me a bunch of bolts in a pack, saying they were the keys to the tires. I hadn’t taken him seriously then but had put the bag where he asked me to. The memory came back immediately, and I retrieved the keys for the man. He opened the trunk and got all the accessories out, then said, “I have better tools in my truck; I’ll be right back.” I watched him go to his vehicle, a 4×4 red/orange truck—visibility was very low. He returned with a massive piece of equipment I had never seen before.
While I stood by the road using my phone light to signal passing vehicles, he worked quietly on the car, seemingly concerned about the spare tire, which had been unused for years. Nevertheless, he changed the tire with ease. The car was raised like a feather, and he maneuvered around it effortlessly. He then asked me to get in the car and drive slowly due to the uncertainty about the spare tire. I thanked him and asked for his number so my husband could thank him later, but he declined gracefully.
I got into the car and started driving slowly, focusing on the road. I drove several kilometers, passed through a town, and continued until I reached another junction where I turned toward another town. That’s when I noticed a vehicle behind me, maintaining my slow speed. I expected it to overtake me, but it didn’t. Because it was so dark, I couldn’t see the vehicle clearly. It kept following me until I got to my destination, and then it sped off. That’s when I realized it was the same truck that had stopped to help me. I was so shocked that all along the stranger was trailing behind me queitly. This stranger not only changed my tire but also ensured my safe arrival to my destination.
Reflecting on this encounter, tears come to my eyes. Was he a God-sent angel or a human angel? How did he appear unnoticed? The area was dark and quiet, and I was alert. I had driven past where I had been waving down cars. On a highway with a speed limit of 100 km/h, he wouldn’t have stopped abruptly to follow me. Perhaps he saw me earlier and turned back to help, but he didn’t return the way he came. He followed me, maintaining my 40-50 km/h speed on a 100 km/h road, gave direct instructions, followed me quetly for several kilometers and I never noticed it for once until I was a minute or two to my destination, and he refused to share his information.
One thing I am certain of is that God cares for His own and is ever faithful to His promises. As Psalm 33:18 says, “The eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy.”
There is an established covenant between God and those who have accepted Him as their personal Lord and Savior. And since God is a covenant-keeping God, such people have nothing to worry about.

“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
– Deuteronomy 31:8
The Psalmist said in Psalm 23:1: “…Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me…”
– Psalm 23:1
What does the Bible say about the possibility of encountering Aangels
“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”
– Hebrews 13:2
Those who have God have nothing to worry about. We just need to trust Him and His wisdom. The amazing part is that even when our faith becomes smaller than that of a mustard seed, God, in His mercy, helps our unbelief.
Having a relationship with God is not just good; it’s the best thing that can ever happen to anyone. God is not evil but good, and we can always trust Him with every aspect of our lives.
A songwriter wrote:
Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus
Just to take Him at His Word
Just to rest upon His promise
Just to know, “Thus saith the Lord”
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus
Oh, for grace to trust Him more
“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.”
– Psalms 34:8

God is with us everywhere, even on a dark, deserted highway! And He can use anyone, even a stranger that changes our tire, to let us know He is always with us. He does care! Amen!
